“Dreamweaver” by Adobe is a Web Development tool and offers a lot of flexibility and vast features for both designers and developers. Compatible with both Windows and Mac, it even offers app-development tools for both iOS and Android devices. Ultimately what makes it popular is that is comfortable for first-timers to use, but also its advanced features enable beginners to transform into professional web-designers in a short space of time.

How it is used in the industry:

It is not widely used in the industry in the area of technical communication. It is mostly used only when there is a web-based documentation project. But, technical communication managers expect new graduates to have working knowledge about Dreamweaver since it is the most commonly used web development tool.

How it is used in the MSTC Program:

DreamWeaver is one of the main tools that is taught to students in the MSTC program. Since it is a basic web development tool, it is viewed as a must-know tool for technical communicators.

Courses in which Dreamweaver is taught in the MSTC Program:

 ENG 317 – Designing Web Communication

Students are taught the concepts of HTML based web development tools. They are taught the basics of using Dreamweaver. Assignments are problem-solving based issues in Dreamweaver and students are given projects based on the design aspects of using Dreamweaver.

ENG 517 – Advanced Technical Writing, Editing, and Document Design

Students are taught to create and design Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) using Dreamweaver and are made to create sample webpages using the CSS. They are also given assignments on designing and adding banners to webpages using FireWork.

Dreamweaver is available to students in all computer-based classrooms in Tompkins. Students can also access Dreamweaver from the Adobe Creative Suite bundle at the CHASS Lab located at Tompkins 113.
